Just because someone is infected with HIV does not mean that they will pass it on to their unborn baby. Without HIV treatments from a medical professional and unborn child has a 1 in 4 chance of contracting HIV from it's infected mother. However, with proper HIV treatment you lower that risk to 1 in a 100. That is a huge difference in the scheme of things especially when you consider the following:

HIV in an adult can take up to a decade before turning into full blown AIDS, however, in a child the transformation from HIV to full blown AIDS is estimated to be around 2 years to onset of full blown aids.

True, but I wonder how many mothers realize that it can be passed on through breast milk. This is a heartbreaker--you think you're doing what's best for your baby and it turns out that you've passed along the virus. And AIDS, as you mentioned, hits children so much harder.

I believe the new average for passing HIV to your baby through breastmilk has risen to a staggering 35 to 50%.

I remember when it came out that this could happen and how devastated the mother in question was when she found out she'd passed it on to her baby. Sad

It is absolutely horrible. I could not imagine bearing the brunt of that burden as a mother amongst everything else that must have been going on.

I do recall a news cast about a mom that fought the state to be able to breast feed against her doctors wishes. She lost and her child was taken and sadly I am glad it went that way. She was offered hard facts and gave them little attention and completely disregarded the risk to her child.

Some mothers are purely selfish arent we supposed to protect our children no matter ahat putting your child at risk is not a loving thing to do in my eyes.

I agree Louise31. Some people just do not think the same as many of us do and it is a sad thing but it is also quite common.

All comes down to education and it amazes me how many people are lacking this about this condition.

Very true it is a sad time when this goes on and there is not anything that we can do to help these people or to teach these people.
