The signs and symptoms of HIV are associated with so many other, non lethal conditions that people can get confused.

Not all tests are as accurate as they should be, either, which is why medical people suggest two tests, 6 months apart to determine if HIV is truly present..

Do you think there are times when people are misdiagnosed based on the signs and symptoms, with false positives, when the second HIV test isn't performed?

False positives are not unheard of nor are false negatives. You were right on about the timing being related to accuracy. Sometimes the virus does not completely take over and can stay hidden or dormant which means you should always take another test 6 months later if you feel you have been exposed to a situation that could put you at risk.

This works well if you are doing a home test and can control who knows you are getting tested, but if that information isn't handled carefully, there could be issues in the other areas of your life.

Could you imagine having to justify having the test done twice a year for 3 years straight? Do you think most people would be comfortable doing this?[/quote]

Well, yes, I see your point. But there are a lot of people that have to get tested these days. If you get poked with any kind of pin or needle that you know someone else was stuck with, if you have been sexually assaulted, if you have had blood transfusions and there are symptoms showing up, and there are other reasons, not just from having sex.
I think I would get tested as often as I had to if I thought that I might have it. Even if it meant lying about why I was getting tested in the first place. Since that is no one's business anyway.

Of course this is always a possibility, but I would certainly take both tests just to make sure.

I know a lot of people who schedule an HIV test in the same way they schedule a physical with their doctor; it's just a matter of wanting to be aware and to take care of themselves
