Let's be honest, how many of us would really have people following us around to try to find out? I mean, I don't make enough money to blackmail, and I'm not famous or anything, so how many people would do that? I do know that there are circumstances in which people hire PI's to investigate someone, but even that seems extreme to me. I say go get tested. The chances of anyone EVER finding out is very slim.
I think the fear of disclosure is very real and needs to be addressed by the medical community, records keeping staff and information technology staff. The suggestions that tests be done at a free clinic where you don't need to reveal your true identity is probably the best way to go if you want security.
Just an FYI - I work at a community mental health center as the IT manager and know how important it is to keep client information confidential. When I run into someone I know here I can see the horrified look on their faces, but I am bound by HIPPA and common sense to not say a word to anyone about who I see at work.
No I'm not. Because I am sure I didn't do anything that will put me at risk of getting infected. However, in case that my result will be disclosed publicly without any consent from me, that's another story. I might file a lawsuit for evading my rights to privacy.
