That's true, AIDS can be transmitted through blood transfusion. But I guess, medical institutions nowadays are very vigilant regarding blood transfusion procedures. There are lots of pre-tests done to ensure compatibility as well as if the donor is free from any infection such as AIDS.

How careless are the doctors that did the blood transfusion. They are the ones responsible for the tennis player having the disease and thus should be put n trial. I just hope that nothing like this ever happened to me when I will some blood transfusion.

I think the medical technologists are the one who perform the pre-screening procedure. I guess the laboratory people are more responsible for such unfortunate event.

The pre-screening procedures miss Hep-C and a bunch of other diseases on a regular basis. Many times the wrong type is pumped into the patient because of a lack of attention by harried medical personnel.

The best choice is bank your own or use the myriad of other choices out there instead of having a transfusion. Saline, expanders, etc. have come a long way in the past 30 years.

If you bank your own though, look at this: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/84938.php

that particular case was in the 80s before there was a widespread awareness of HIV/AIDs

Arthur Ashe was a gentleman and a great player. His loss was definitely regretable. Even though it was a long time ago and more precautions are now in place to prevent such a thing, stories still come out about similar things happening. It scares me as much as anything because it's something we can't really control -- other people doing their jobs correctly.
