I heard that there is a city in the eastern U.S. that is trying to get all of its citizens tested for HIV.

Frankly, I would find this unacceptably invasive and would fight to retain control over my choice to be tested or not, especially since any findings could affect the ability to get health insurance in the future, among other things.

Do you hope people will comply and be tested, or are you hoping someone challenges this action to prevent a dangerous precedent being set?

Heck yes this is wrong. You can't force people to do things unless they are of obvious danger to others. You can't just say because you're alive and live here that you have to be tested. It'll never go over. Too many civil rights involved here.

Nothing wrong with encouraigng people to take the tests but if by 'trying' you mean 'against their will' this is a clear act of human rights violation.

I think HIV testing is no big deal at all except if it will be done forcefully or mandatory. That could possibly violate human rights. Maybe signing a consent should be done to settle legal issues.

forcing a test on people is wrong - regardless of whom the people are...

One more thought --- if they start it with HIV, that would set a precedent. It is not out of the realm to think we could end up having to test for all kinds of things. It's a can of worms best left unopened, at least at this point.

ultimately, this is the reason why so many people are unsure about DNA testing for cancer, heart disease and other disease markers: while an individual has the right to have the tests performed, having them forced just creates a number of conflicts (and ways for the individual to be placed behind the insurance companies and big business)

And once you open that door, there's just no stopping it. Cloning, for example, is coming. It just scares me the way they clone today, much of which I'm sure we don't know about. You just really have to be careful when setting a precedent for anything.

Any time you have a concerted effort to accomplish a health goal, whether it manifests itself as a daily or hourly reminder on T.V, you still see force, no matter how gentle they try to make it appear.

I think each person has a right to privacy and to taking the steps to testing themselves. No one should be forced to do anything. How will getting everyone to get tested help? We need to spend more time on education and prevention, not forcing people to get tested.
