Did you know that it is illegal for gay males to give blood?

I didn't. Why? Apparently people who practice gay male sex are considered more at risk of HIV. This of course brings out a lot of issues like 'What if a donor with a rare blood type happens to be gay?'

I didnt know that I suppose they do class them as a greater risk, I dont agree but that might be the reason.

I think it is ridiculous. I think as with any donor there should be a portion of the blood set aside and tested before used on a recipient. I also believe that there should be mandatory testing for regular donors with proper ID verification on top of that.

Enough background checking will show that it is also more prominent in black males and easier to contract by women and there would be hell to pay if they discriminated against women and African American men that way so why should they be allowed to with homosexuals?

Although gay men are high risk, so are a lot of other people who are not gay but have multiple sexual partners. Anyway stopping gay people from donating blood because of the risk makes sense since they are known to be high risk

Here's a thought... don't they test your blood before they donate it?!! I would hope so. So wouldn't it make sense to test a gay male for HIV and then decide whether or not to accept his blood. This law is absurd!

Though the blood is screened whenever it is donated, no matter the source, the recipient might think twice if the donor was known to practice risky behavior. Many would not accept blood from an known drug addict. Period. That person's lifestyle is risky.

A person might decide to bank their own blood if they have these concerns.

Otherwise - there are MANY alternatives to blood transfusions. Modern medical science is far more advanced than it was in the 80's. Blood expanders and saline may take a little longer to bring you back to complete health but are 100% safe in the HIV/AIDS arena. Bloodless surgery is no longer a dream either.

It's important to note that HIV tests has a chance of giving out a false negative specifically on people who have recently contracted the virus prior to the testing.

I did not know that and I find it a shame that sexuality has anything to do with donating blood. It is just as easy for a heterosexual to be at risk of passing on STD’s as a gay one is. Simply ignorant.

Whe you go to donate blood, they ask you a ton of questions, including if you have had sex with a man that has had sex with another man since the 70's. they sk you how many sexual partners you have had, they ask you when the last time you left the country was and where did you go, It's not just homosexuals that can't give blood. If you have had ANY peircings or tatoos in the last year you can't give blood. IF you are on certain meds you can't. If you have lots of sex partners you can't. They have to try to take every precaution that they can. OF course, it all depends on if the donor is honest as well.

Yes, but those with piercings and tattoos can give blood again. Those who have left the country are able to donate after a set amount of time has passed. If you are a male who has EVER had sex with a male you cannot donate blood to the American Red Cross (some hospitals have set aside this policy because they see it for it what it is: discriminatory)
