The HIV antibody test is the only safe screening method. Generally, there are two test done by professional laboratories: the ELISA and the Western blot method. These tests have a very high reliability.
Recently, some companies also produce "HIV/AIDS home tests" to allow privacy and flexibility of screening.
In this board you can discuss everything about the HIV test, test methods and so on. |

| I think everyone who is or has been sexually active, used needles, or been exposed to someone else's blood should definitely get tested. There is no reason not to be tested and this is not something you want to walk around with and not know about you will then only put those that you love best in jeopardy. |

Well,
This may be a good idea but you have to weigh how much a positive test will destroy your life, even if you don't develop full blown AIDS! At best, you can just decline having sex with anyone.
Home tests are a step in the right direction, but now we need secret ways of getting the medications to keep the virus as dormant as possible! |

| Yes a positive test could be devastating. Not knowing that you are positive can destroy even more though lives especially if you are sexually active or an active needle user. There are strict laws that protect your privacy and granted these may be shared with certain agencies but they are not broadcast by any means. And by doing a home test you still have to go in and be tested by a medical professional to receive the medication that can save your life or at least prolong it quite extensively in some cases. They do not even publicly promote AIDS foundations and services very often to help ensure privacy as well. These services are generally only known to you by recommendation of a medical professional. Home tests are great if you are an honest person who will not then go out and spread it out of spite... Yes it happens way more often than any of us would like to believe. For me it is better to be informed and even more so as a mother. |

Not getting tested because you don't want to know if your life has been made complicated does not help you or anyone else.
You should decide not to have sexual contact with anyone until you have been tested. Just like you should not drive until you have auto insurance in your hand.
Shooting wildly into a dark room filled with family and friends, not knowing if your machine gun is loaded with blanks or live rounds would be ludicrous. If all you had to do was briefly flip on a flashlight and check the chamber, you'd do it - right?
Now that you have that information, you know where to aim. That's all. It would be the height of selfishness for an diagnosed carrier to continue to have relations with uninfected persons.
You HAVE to find out. |

| Very well said, Eyes4. It's crazy at best and homicidal at worst to avoid getting tested if you think you've been exposed and might be HIV positive. |

| And it would be impossible for you to keep that particular secret. Every time you get a checkup they draw blood, for crying out loud. Are you going to forgo visiting the doctor as well as playing one? |

You know, not everyone gets blood tests every time they get check ups, just like there are many people who only see the doctor if they have a problem. They don't go in without a map in their head regarding what will be addressed.
I believe labs don't routinely test for AIDS because they understand how devastating just being tested can be to someone's life, whether or not they are the test is positive. To be tested, you must sign a separate consent form if the testing is through your primary care physician.
The fact that consent must be given indicates that the system itself is aware of its limitations when it comes to privacy.
NO matter how noble it would be to get tested, society has to change a lot to make it safe public policy. |

testing can be overwhelming; i think though that the sense that it would be possible to infect others because someone didn't want to deal with the process however is just awful...
if you get tested regularly, it's not a big deal and you're able to know that you're taking care of yourself and your family and everyone you care about |
