Ogikubo Hospital Vice President Hideji Hanabusa says he and his staff have developed a method to remove the AIDS-causing HIV virus from sperm, and that using the procedure, he has already been successful in implementing in vitro fertilization for couples in which only the husbands were infected.
About 65 babies have been born through this method, and all the mothers and children have remained HIV-free, the newspaper said.
If this continues to prove successful this is good news for HIV couples although it's currently not allowed for cases where both parents are HIV positive pending further tests on the method perhaps. _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be. ~Grandma Moses
That is awesome and gives people with AIDS hope of being able to have a family without giving them the disease. If we can make advancements like this, it is only a matter of time before they get that vaccine going.
This is a wonderful step in the right direction. I'm just curious about how the Japanese health insurance industry handles this type of procedure. I know in the United States, this would be tied up in all sorts of red tape and take years before it was allowed to the general public. And even then, the insurance companies would probably consider it a cosmetic procedure and not cover it. Regardless, it's wonderful news for these couples.
