Just curious; how many people on the board know a great deal about HIV/AIDS? It seems to me that a site that should be focused on information should have a lot less fear than many of the threads I've read.
With people talking about being a hermit if they were positive and in the thread about prisoners saying that extra precautions and training would be needed, it just seems as though there are a lot of misconceptions even here on the boards. |

| Where besides a forum like this one would you suggest the less knowledgeable turn? Or have you learned all you need to about the questions and concerns of the well-meaning public at large? |

| I'll admit that there are things I"ve learned here that I didn't know, and a lot that I already did know. I have worked with small children for a long time, and I had to learn a lot about it then. We had to learn what we had to be careful with and what was okay. I will be honest, that when a child was hurt, I didnt' think much about running for plastic gloves first before tending to the child, but a lot of the girls did. I do recognize a lot of fear, and I"m sure I have a little. I think it is only natural for people to be scared of what they don't understand, but it is how we react that sets us apart. We need to try to learn as much as we can about HIV and AIDS. To help each other and society. |

I guess I'm just thinking that when I look at the board and see spots for people with HIV or AIDS to write about their condition it really makes me sad to see so many people saying things that are so biased, judgmental and ill-informed |

Interesting reaction. I should think it would make you more determined to dispel the fears of others concerning HIV. There are so many fora who offer suppport to the HIV-positive but so few where people who may not have the disease can pose the sometimes odd questions they may have and expect to get honest, straightforward answers from those in the know.
And characterizing other posters' responses as biased, fearful, and ill-informed is judgmental. |

| There is way too much sadness on this forum. Folks are expressing how sad they are on every other post. We started with posting facts, histories, studies and links and moved to characterizing others' posts instead of asking for clarification on their point of view or explanation of same. Ignorance can be sad. Help dispel it. If you see a post that is "biased, judgmental and ill-informed" add to the forum and ask questions about the post in question. |

I'll agree with that. I do see a lot of fear here as well, but I dont' see anything wrong with fear, until it begins to cloud your jusgement or make you paranoid or treat people bad. I mainly know about AIDS in children. I have read a lot on that. I DO have a certain amount of fear in getting it, I think everyone does. It's a healthy thing to make us a little bit cautious, however, I am also full of compassion and want so much for things to get better for people with AIDS. Adults and kids alike. We do need better info. I do too. |

my concern is often that there are times in which fear stops us from being willing to learn and it gets in the way of compassion... |

You'll just have to take the chance that this is not one of those times. Maybe we're all pretty open-minded or we wouldn't be posting here the way we are, with civility and respect. |

I absolutely love your response! It's not being afraid that's, well, wrong; it's what we do in response to our fear. No one can answer for another person, but internally, we know the truth. Fear is one part of life. It's not necessarily bad. What defines us as people is how we channel the fear, and the choices we make when confronted with it. _________________ ==Go to your happy place! |
