Just came across an article in the online version of the San Francisco Chronicle that says a gene that protects blacks from certain types of malaria may make them more susceptible to HIV infection. Researchers say the gene can increase a black person's odds of getting infected by 40 percent. Here's the link:

That does make some sense.

I guess that is the reason why a huge number of us black people suffer from the disease. But regardless of genes, I think what makes us most susceptible is our behaviour.

What do you think it will take to curb behavior that perpetuates the AIDS virus? One of the things that comes to mind is education to the even poorest parts of the world. Until people understand that behavior is directly linked to the spreading of AIDS, I'm afraid that this killer disease will be around for a while.

You are very right education is the one thing that stands to have the best impact on the number of AIDS cases in my opinion. Too many people do not fully understand the disease much less the impact it can have.

I agree as well, that education is a very big part of it. But there is more as well. Somehow we have to start taking care of those that have it in other countries and help them to understand what is happening.

HIV is a world spread disease. If you would like to help others who are infected with HIV then don’t look further because you can also some of those infected in your country. I would help my countrymen first then to help other nation.

definitely. but honestly, i believe the most important thing is starting with your own education and knowledge. the more that anyone knows, the more good that can be done within communities, states, one's own country and then internationally

A good knowledge will also come handy because you must know something about the disease first before you help others. You must know how it infects people so that you can avoid being infected.

This "gene" responsible for protection against malaria isn't present in most Blacks in the USA.
