Would / could quantine for persons with HIV be a good means for prevention? At one time colonies existed for persons with leoparsy to prevent the spread of that disease. Would this work with this one? Opinions?

Leper colonies exist because leprosy is a bit more infectious. It can spread by air through coughing and sneezing.

Quarantine for HIV victims is not really viable practice. People avoid being tested as it is. The more I think about it the more ridiculous it sounds.

It could have worked during the early days when it was discoved. But the problem with HIV is that infected persons can live a long time without any symtops before finally dying of aids. That is why HIV has spread so fast. It would be impossible to quarantine millions of people for several years.

I disagree that it would be impossible to literally quarantine millions of people for decades.

Though it is hypothetically possible, it would be extremely unpopular politically and would therefore never happen.

Maybe yes but they should be given jobs so that they can be productive citizens of their own country. In this case they would be proud of their selves and their loved ones as well.

I think it is too late to consider quarantine. I think the virus has already started mutating so that it can survive, undetected, in the general population.

Definitely to late to be talking that. Then you can talk quarantining those with the HPV virus and other STD's that cause HPV as that can cause Cancer and be deadly and STD's spread like wildfire. See how ridiculously out of hand that could get?? You give people the right to quarantine by force (which it would have to be by) over a virus and you open a can of worms I can guarantee you will pray doesn't bite you in the butt ...lol

Facts are there are very few infections that happen that are not done by a poor choice made by the individual. Though there are some sad cases that the infected is at no fault in the contraction. Overall the best thing to do is to protect yourself no matter what.

I bet AIDS gained strength due to "defacto quarantine". Politicians and the health care system didn't even talk about AIDS because it was limited to Africa. They thought it would never be an issued in other countries.

Since that quarantine didn't work......

Isn't that what they do in Cuba? I seem to recall seeing a story about that on 60 minutes. They have concentration camps for AIDS patients. No attempt is made at treatment, only containment. i can't think of what else to call them.

Not sure how this can be done. First of all, do you expect people to voluntarily come forward, say they have AIDS and then be shipped away somewhere? Or, the other option is mandatory testing for every person alive. Then you end up violating their civil rights.
