A user in a different discussion brought up a good point about dentist. Should people with HIV be banned from certain jobs? Wouldn't this be discriminatory in a way?
Dentists, Nurses, Doctors and jobs that involve treating wounds.
That's a tough question. If you were the patient, would you let your wounds be treated by an infected person? It really depends on how much you trust him/her, doesn't it? Is this discriminatory? I don't really think so. It's not the same as a white guy avoiding treatment cause his doctor's black or chinese. _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be. ~Grandma Moses
Yes, quicte simply yes. It is unfortunate, but really would put people more at ease. It is hard for HIV to survive outside a host - and it would seem far fetched for a doctor, dentist to cut him/herself and then somehow get that blood to blood contact into you - but personally I would opt out of being treated by an HIV positive doctor/dentist.etc.
I most definately think they should be banned from practising work like that. The risk of infecting one of their patients is high even if they use precautions. Accidents can happen so it is best to prevent HIV infected people for working in such professions
I am definitely for the rights of those infected with HIV however I agree there should be some limitations instilled to protect others. It is to me not discriminatory but preventative. For the same reason we do not let pedophiles work in schools or as pediatricians- sometimes ones individual rights have to be limited to ensure protection for the masses.
The mature and civil choice is for the infected person to decide to protect others, by working in an industry or position where the risk of spreading the virus is negligible if at all possible.
Self discipline is not common in society in general. But this choice would be a show of good citizenship.

Wouldn't it be just wonderful if we could rely on everyone to make the right decisions when it came to the safety of others? It is sad to me that this is something that we can not count on...very sad.
Very sad indeed and very true. Relying on someone else to make the right decision could be the worst decision you make. You can only rely on yourself to make that right decision. _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be. ~Grandma Moses
This is a touchy topic. It is discrimination, but at the same time I think people should be aware that there is a danger in allowing HIV positive dentists to perform oral surgery on one of their clients. _________________ Carpe Diem
I definitely agree. I just feel for those on the other side and can't help but feel bad that they are limited to what they can or better yet should and should not do.
