I was discussing the TB thread with a friend.
With the gas crises leading more people to use mass transit, might cases of TB, among other viral or bacterial infections normally associated with weakened immune systems, spike due to all of the close contact?
Many people riding mass transit have spent years driving their own cars, and not being exposed to many of the immunological challenges associated with close quarters and crowds of people. They may not have the antibodies available to fight off infections without developing illness, even though they are otherwise healthy.
Should we all be using supplements to help our immune systems out, this coming winter?
everyone's immune system is different. if you're really concerned about it, wear a mask in much the same way that citizens of Asian nations do (and as they did during the SARS outbreak a couple of years back). immune boosters don't always work (think about the news not all that far back about airborne not working)
I think that it is very possible for a lot of people to get sick more often that way, if with nothing else, just basic illnesses. It is true that our immune systems work differently, but since I used to work in the child care industry, I discovered that everytime someone came to work in a daycare that hadn't done that sort of work before, regardless of how healthy they were or how many children they had of their own, they would stay sick with one thing after another for a couple of months. We were told that it was just that our immune systems werent' used to being bombarded with all the things we were coming in contact with in so many smalll kids. It leveled out as we got used to it. Kids tend to do the same thing when they start out in a daycare or in school.
