Resistant forms of HIV are apparently caused by mutation. When the virus replicates itself it mutates becoming more resistant to the treatment drugs being taken. I think the reason we don't hear them much now is it's not really something new.
It's scary that the disease can just mutate and change like that. What if we find a cure for one strand of HIV, but mutations render the cure inoperable for the other strands?
If the virus mutates due to resistance, how will the scientist could possibly create a vaccine against HIV? Drug resistance seems to create a lot of trouble...
It is a scary thing that is for sure but if you look at it it simply mutates like almost every virus out there. They are constantly having to come up with flu vaccines year after year because of the mutations and occasionally their best guesses fall flat on their faces as will happen on occasion with HIV. I hold out hope that all in all they will stay on top of it and figure it out as well as they can.
