Very few people will feel comfortable participating in tests that might lead to medications that will treat or eliminate HIV.
Do you think prison inmates should be encouraged to participate in these clinical trials? |

Sounds good to me. Only those that will never be let out though. The guards would have to have special training and protection.
Testing on the prison community would be akin to the thread about quarantine.

| possibly encouraged, but not forced. that falls under cruel and unusual and is definitely a crime against them. the challenge as i see it is that too many people are unwilling to do anything to help to figure things out and to be willing to step up and participate |

| I think a great target population in prison would be child rapists, child molesters, rapists and mass murders. Did I leave anyone out? As for as their civil rights are concerned, they lost them the moment they committed the crime. They can pay their dues to society by being guinea pigs for AIDS research. Then I'll know my tax dollars are doing something worthy instead of supporting the scum in prison. |

Encouraged would be the right word for it. I'm not really sure how this could work though. Perhaps with prisoners on death row and even then they would need to be isolated from the other inmates during this trials if the trials involve possibly infecting the inmate with the virus. Otherwise the chances of the disease spreading within the prison is really high and not all of this prisoners are in for life. _________________ Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be. ~Grandma Moses |

| the point of the matter is that anyone can choose to participate in HIV vaccine testing without a risk of becoming ill |

| That seems a little creepy to me. A lot creepy, actually. Where do we stop? HIV/AIDS? Heart Disease? Alzheimer's? Diabetes? Depression? The common cold? Ringworm? And what happens if there are no volunteers, and I'm betting there won't be. If I were a prisoner I wouldn't want it known I had HIV. Do we start playing Let's Make a Deal, then? Time off for participation? |

Nope I think you have them all. I agree, they're doing nothing productive in there so why not used them. Hopefully one of these medications fails and they end up dying. Sick bastards. |

| I do think it is a good idea. And in all likely hood, they would get them to volunteer with just a few incentive offers. A good meal after the test is given, or something like that. I have heard that that can make a big difference. A lot of them probably would do it for a pack of cigarettes or a can of beer. |

I do not think that it would be fair to make inmates participate in such a study. Even if those who are in for life are the ones to be tested it will affect the other population since in the prison system inmates do have sex with other inmates. Even the hardest of prisoners have rights.... they should not have to be a guinee pig for anyone. _________________ Visit www.bestvideotutorials.net to find some awesome video tutorials. |
