I know abstinence for many people is an old-fashioned, out-dated concept, but sometimes the simple things in life are the best. I know in the United States money is being spent on trying to find a cure for AIDS but in the meantime, why try something simple?

Abstinence has been promoted and preached for years but too many people have a "it won't happen to me" attitude which means they will not abstain. Many people do not even wait til their partners and themselves are tested before having intercourse. It is a sad fact but a fact none-the-less.

Absolutely. Some people will choose abstinence, but you can't turn on the TV (it seems) without hearing about the fact that for many teens, abstinence simply means not having vaginal sex - and they don't take precautions during oral either.

The challenge with HIV/AIDS on many levels is so many people want to believe that it's only something that happens to gay men and IV drug users... They seem to believe that if they aren't doing those things they'll be fine.

yes, that is true. It is an all about me, instand gratification, thing that is going on in many people. And I hear that some people even get a thrill from feeling like they are doing something risky. Taking a chance. How do you combat that attitude?

You don't combat that attitude; you merely accept that it exists and choose not to participate.

One thing that I thought about after I created this thread is that someone may abstain from sex for think about other ways the disease is transmitted. An accidental prick from a needle can spread the disease. But I agree with many of you who say that the mentality, "that it won't happen to me", is too prevalent.

ultimately, i believe that combating an attitude is a matter of choosing to approach things differently. we can all make changes and have an influence on others

That requires a strong moral character. Unfortunately, not everyone is strong enough, or selfless enough, to do it. It's a sign of our times, and I think it's very sad that folks would rather risk lives rather than simply channel their energy in another direction. Sex is good, but you don't need it to live.

I'd argue that not every woman who is infected is infected because of a choice; rape happens even to those who believe in abstaining. further, when you look at a lot of the children in Africa who are infected it's because culturally it is still believed that the only way to cure AIDS is to have sex with a virgin

And, of course, abstinence isn't a 100% certainty anyway because sex isn't the only way to get HIV. Nothing in this life is 100% when you get right down to it.
