Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections.

There is a wide range of treatments, but HIV / AIDS can not be healed. The treatments help the infected people to live as normal as possible and survive for a long time.

Epidemiology of the HI virus

Globally, between 33.4 and 46 million people currently live with HI virus. In 2005, between 3.4 and 6.2 million people were newly infected and between 2.4 and 3.3 million people with AIDS died, an increase from 2003 and the highest number since 1981. [source: UNAIDS report]
